Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season.
Villa said in a club statement on Friday that the deal is subject to completion of a medical and receiving a work permit.
A number of clubs across the Premier League and Europe were looking to sign Coutinho, but the influence of manager and former teammate Steven Gerrard was reportedly key in the 29-year-old choosing Villa.
Villa are 13th in the Premier League table but have made a promising start to life under Gerrard, who replaced Dean Smith as manager in November.
Villa are in action against Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend and they return to Premier League action on January 15, also against United.
